At the end of September Peugeot unveiled its latest SUV, the 4008. The new Peugeot SUV completes Peugeot’s SUV line up which currently consists of the 3008 and 5008 models. The model has been confirmed for the European market but not the UK specifically yet. In Europe it will come as a 4x4 model with three selectable drive modes - two-wheel drive, four-wheel drive and ‘Lock’.

The Peugeot 4008 is based on the same platform as the 4007, but it has 300mm shorter front and rear overhangs, while keeping its predecessor’s long wheelbase and wide tracks to maximise cabin space.

There will be a total of four engine options for the European market, two petrol and two diesels. The petrol units will be a 1.6 litre with 114 bhp and a 2.0 litre with 148 bhp. The diesel engines are a 1.6 litre 110 bhp and a 1.8 litre with 148 bhp. The larger diesel looks the more appealing on paper and will probably become the more popular model.

On the outside the new 4008 will have 18-inch alloys, a vertical grille, flared wheel arches, sill protectors and LED daylight running lamps that “complement the headlamps”. While on the inside customers get a glass panoramic roof, a touch-screen navigation system and reversing camera.

Peugeot’s SUV range is testament to an increase in popularity of SUV models in Europe, in the UK crossover and SUV models have taken off too. People prefer to have the practicality of a 4x4 whilst still being able to park it around town. In 10-15 years time will there be any traditional hatchback models around?
